Destoners use the same stratification principle as gravity tables: a vibrating, porous deck with an upward airflow: but are designed specifically to remove material that is heavier than the grain rather than lighter. As the grain passes over the destoner deck, heavy contaminants such as stones, sand, glass fragments, metal clods, and dense weed seeds sink to the deck surface, while grain floats on the air cushion and exits over the light product discharge. The heavy fraction discharges separately for disposal. Destoners are positioned immediately upstream of milling, colour sorting, or other sensitive processing equipment to provide a final protection against hard foreign material that would cause damage or contamination.
