Gravity tables (also called air tables or density separators) use a combination of vibration, a porous deck surface, and an upward airflow to stratify material by density. Dense, heavy particles sink to the deck surface and travel to one side, while light, hollow, or shrivelled particles float on the air cushion and travel to the other side. The result is a precise separation that cannot be achieved by screening alone. Gravity tables are used after preliminary screening to improve the quality of certified seed, export grain, and milled products. They are particularly effective at removing insect-damaged, frost-affected, or early-harvest shrivelled grain from a batch.
